Trailer Insurance

Whether you’re looking to insure a travel trailer, a utility trailer, or a recreational vehicle, you need a quality insurance policy to protect your investment. Solutions Insurance is here to help you find the coverage you deserve for your trailer. Our licensed professionals are dedicated to helping you navigate the complexities of trailer insurance to find a policy that’s right for you.

What Is Trailer Insurance?

Trailer insurance is designed to protect a wide range of non-motorized trailers from damage and losses, whether they occur on the road or while parked. This includes travel trailers, fifth wheels, utility trailers, cargo trailers, park model trailers, truck-mounted campers, and pop-up campers.

Personal Auto Insurance and Trailers

Many drivers mistakenly assume their personal car insurance will also cover their trailer. The reality is that most standard auto insurance policies in Canada do not provide comprehensive coverage for trailers.

For example, your mandatory third-party liability coverage may offer some protection for damage to your trailer if it was on the road and hooked up to your tow vehicle, but it will not cover any damage that occurs while your trailer is stationary or parked. Furthermore, a basic auto policy would not protect you if your trailer was stolen or vandalized. If you are relying on your standard car insurance to protect your trailer, you could be on the hook for expensive repair or replacement costs.

The best way to protect your trailer is to purchase a separate trailer insurance policy or by adding a specific endorsement or rider to your existing car insurance policy that extends coverage to your trailer.

Is Trailer Insurance Mandatory?

Unlike car insurance, trailer insurance is not mandatory in Canada for non-motorized trailers. You are allowed to use your trailer without insuring it, provided it is being towed by a registered and insured vehicle.

However, if you own a motorized trailer, such as a motorhome or RV, you are legally required to purchase a separate, individual auto insurance policy for it before you can drive it.

Understanding Trailer Insurance Coverage

When you purchase trailer insurance, you can choose from a variety of coverage options that go beyond the basic mandatory coverage of your auto policy.

  • Third Party Liability Coverage: This mandatory coverage helps pay for costs if you are found at fault for an accident, but it only applies to your trailer if it was hooked up to your vehicle at the time of the accident.
  • Collision Coverage: This optional coverage is very useful for protecting your trailer. It covers damage caused to your trailer following a serious car accident, such as a collision with another vehicle or an object like a lamp post.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: This is highly recommended as it protects your trailer from a wide range of non-collision perils, such as theft, vandalism, fire, wind, hail, and water damage. This is the only type of coverage that will protect your trailer while it is parked or stored.
  • All Perils Coverage: This optional coverage combines the protection of both Collision and Comprehensive coverage, offering a broad range of protection against a variety of risks with a single deductible.

Additional Coverage for Extra Protection

You can further customize your policy with endorsements for extra protection:

  • Campsite/Vacation Liability Coverage: This covers you when your trailer is parked at a campsite or trailer park.
  • Accessories Endorsement: This covers damage to items attached to your trailer, such as awnings, satellite dishes, and antennas.
  • Emergency Expenses Coverage: This helps cover costs if your trailer suffers an unexpected breakdown.
  • Vehicle Storage Coverage: This protects various types of trailers while they are in storage.
  • Total Loss Replacement Coverage: This covers you if your trailer is a total loss and needs to be replaced with a new one.

Does Trailer Insurance Cover the Contents?

A standard trailer insurance policy typically does not cover the personal contents inside your trailer if they are damaged or stolen. This is similar to how a car insurance policy does not cover personal belongings stolen from your vehicle. For this, you may need to rely on your home or tenant insurance policy, which often has limits on coverage for items outside the home.
